Matariki Writing

Matariki Reflection
30.4.20

Kia Ora everyone!
Today I’m going to reflect on the past year for me. I’m going to talk about my own
achievements, family achievements, and the celebration of Matariki.

First off Matariki. Matariki is a celebration about family, agriculture, and history.
It was originally celebrated by the Maori getting together and feasting on the crops
they had prepared. It’s also very important because it restarts the Maori new year.
Matariki appears in late May or early June.

In Maori, Matariki is also known as the Pleiades. It’s a cluster of stars appearing at night.
It literally means ‘ the eyes of god’ or ‘ little eyes’ ( Mata Riki). There is also a very
cool legend behind Matariki. The legend is that the stars are the seven sisters and
they are the Matariki. The sisters are  Alcyone which is Matariki, eyes of god,
Atlas sky, Electra is sky spring, Taygeta Waitī is sweet water, and Pleione is Earth.

Now time for my reflection. The past year has been awesome throughout everything
such as sports, curriculum, family, and accomplishments. The past year for the
curriculum was getting excellence in everything, becoming sports and health captain,
kapa haka festival, and much more. For sports I got 6 or 7 trophies, 1 gold medal for
basketball championships, 4 netball trophies throughout 8 people, playing and
winning school sports, getting into the South Island Maori netball team, and much,
much more.

My family and I went on one of the best trips yet. We went to Invercargill, my parent's
hometown, for a week. We saw our Papa who we haven’t seen for 6 years, meet
mum’s closest friends, saw the school I might move to, saw a famous stadium which
was amazing! They had rock climbing, 10 indoor and outdoor netball courts, the place where famous bikers train, indoor climbing, movie theatre, famous people’s trophies, uniform, and more. The past year has been one of the best years yet even including Covid - 19. But the worst thing is probably losing all my fitness. I have tried to keep my fitness up but to be honest it’s not gonna happen. Especially in this house and family.

Overall this year has been fantastic. I can’t wait for the next years to come.  I am also very proud of my curriculum because I have gotten merit or excellence for each year I have been at school.
