Why Matariki Should Be An National Holiday

Hi everybody,
This is a letter that we would write to the government. We were to write why we think Matariki should be a holiday.

Why Matariki Should Be A National Holiday

Kia Ora,

To whom it ever concerns Matariki should be a national holiday.
Matariki is a part of our culture as New Zealand. For Maori it’s the start of their new year
. We ourselves celebrate new years on January the 1st. If we get a national holiday
for our new years surely the Maori culture should be allowed a national holiday for
there new year. Matariki is a celebration of people, the culture, language, and spiritual
history. Families get together to eat Kai, weave, play games, do fireworks, and more.
Matariki celebrates the life and death of ancestors, family, and spiritual legends,
and animals. Matariki is a diverse, cultural celebration. It celebrates our New Zealand
maori culture, our own diversity, our history as New Zealand, and much much more.
Overall Matariki should be a national holiday. If we get a national holiday for our new
year, surely the maori new year Matariki should be a holiday! So I believe on the 25th
of June Matariki should be celebrated as a national holiday!

Sincerely,
Aamaria Beal
